What to do if you have an accident or claim

Statistically your chances of avoiding an accident throughout your riding career, are low, so its important to be prepared and know what actions to take in order to simplify your insurance claim.

If you have an accident with another motorist, there are a number of things to do that will make your life easier when working with your insurance company.

You must exchange your personal information if there is damage to either vehicle. The most important information to get is, the drivers name, address, telephone number, - and most importantly get the registration number, make, model and color of the other vehicle.

  • Try to get details from witnesses who may have seen the accident.

  • If anyone is injured, you must notify the police. If you are injured, you should either visit your Doctor or go to the Hospital for a check up. Note: Failure to do this will limit any personal injury claim that you may want to make, so be safe and see a doctor.

  • Do not admit liability, even if it is obvious that you were in the wrong. Always leave that door open for further investigation.

  • Don't accuse or be rude, if you are courteous and polite, they’ll be less likely to lie in any statement they make to investigators.

  • Don't accept a payment at the scene - you may not fully appreciate the cost of repairs or injury.

  • Collecting Evidence
Collect as much information as possible about the accident scene, vehicle and property damage, sustained injuries and witnesses. Obviously, you most likely won't have a camera with you, but it may be worth returning to the scene later for pictures.

Evidence Collection Kit: Keep a pen or pencil, some paper and a disposable camera in a waterproof bag under your seat. In the event of an accident you'll be able to take pictures of vehicle damage, Injuries, road layouts, obstructions, weather related issues like ice, witnesses at the scene etc. A copy of the highway code can also help you determine any items you should collect details of.

Write down road names, direction each vehicle was traveling, road signs in the area and speed limits, condition of the other vehicle involved along with weather and road conditions.
Take pictures of: Any injuries you sustained, and damage to your bike, clothing etc.

Keep Receipts for Repairs and Expenses: and a log of all dialogue with insurers and 3rd parties in relation to the accident.

Completing Your Claim Statement
Your claim statement needs to tell your insurer what happened, who was in the wrong and how the accident could or could not have been avoided.

Always state the lane, speed and direction you were traveling along with the position of the other vehicle when you first noticed it, .Estimate the other vehicles speed if you feel it was an issue in the accident. Did you have your lights on? Did you have on any high visibility clothing? Did you flash, sound your horn or indicate.

Clearly state the actions of the other motorist, did they indicate in anyway, did they admit liability, could they could see you clearly. Try to include a diagram if it will help clarify the situation. If it was their fault write down what they did wrong.

Was the road surface to blame: If you've had a spill for no apparent reason and no other vehicle was involved, it may well be due to poor road surface. Pot holes, gravel, sand and diesel spills are common causes of motorcycle accidents.

Your local council is responsible for maintaining the roads. If you suffer loss or damage as a result of poor road surfaces, you may be able to claim compensation with your local council instead of claiming it on your insurance. Some authorities take the irresponsible attitude of paying out claims rather than fixing the roads since many people don't bother claiming. You’ll need to collect evidence of the fault and show receipts for repairs etc. Be sure to act fast since you may find your evidence gets swept away quickly.
